From the Printing Press to the Ward: 27 Years of Guelph Heritage

For many, a career is measured in years. For me, it’s measured in the stories, the streetscapes, and the deep-rooted history of the city I call home. Before I was helping families find their dream homes in The Ward or North of Woodlawn, I spent nearly three decades at the heart of Guelph’s information hub: The Guelph Mercury.

The Guelph Mercury building, circa 2010. Before transitioning into real estate, this was my home base for nearly three decades. My 27-year legacy here in advertising and marketing wasn’t just about ink and paper; it was about connecting with the people and businesses that make Guelph thrive. Today, I use that same hyper-local insight to help my clients navigate the Guelph real estate market with a perspective only a lifelong local can provide.

A Legacy Reclaimed on Macdonell Street

My 27-year tenure at the Guelph Mercury wasn’t just a job; it was a homecoming. Long before the Mercury stood at its historic location, my family was already shaping the local landscape.

The Mercury building sat on the stretch of Macdonell Street where my Great Uncle Wilson ran Bennett’s Menswear. Just a stone’s throw away was the site of my Great Uncle William Bennett’s Blacksmith Shop. Standing on that sidewalk today, I don’t just see a street—I see the echoes of the Bennett legacy, from the clang of the anvil to the craftsmanship of a fine suit, and eventually, the hum of the printing press.

From “Office Boy” to Real Estate Professional

I started my journey at the Guelph Mercury as an Advertising Assistant (the modern-day version of the “Office Boy”). I learned the business from the ground up, literally delivering the proofs and learning the value of every word on the page.

Hard work and a deep love for this community saw me rise to become the Account Executive responsible for the Mercury’s largest business unit: Real Estate and Home Building. Leading the Guelph and District Homes section was my “University of Real Estate.”

During those years, I didn’t just sell ads; I built relationships. I worked side-by-side with Guelph’s most respected Realtors and Builders. They mentored me in the nuances of:

  • Strategic Marketing: How to make a property stand out in a crowded market.
  • Copy and Offer Writing: Mastering the art of clear, persuasive communication.
  • Development Cycles: Learning how raw land is transformed into the vibrant subdivisions and communities we live in today.

Why Details Matter: From the Page to the Purchase

In the newspaper business, a single typo could change a story; in Real Estate, a single missed detail can change a life. My background taught me that details matter. Whether I am crafting the perfect ad copy to showcase your home or meticulously drafting an offer to protect your interests, I apply the same “eagle eye” I used for decades at the Mercury. Precise language in an offer is just as critical as high-impact advertising, both require a professional touch to get the result you deserve.

Why This Matters for You

When you work with me, you aren’t just getting a Realtor; you’re getting a Local Ambassador. My transition from the Guelph Mercury to Royal LePage Royal City Realty was a natural evolution. My background in newspapers, and membership in Grand Highlands Homebuilders Association allows me to see the “big picture” of the Guelph market.

Whether we are discussing the historical character of a home in The Ward or scouting the best access points for GORBA trails, I bring 27 years of media savvy and a lifetime of Bennett family history to the table.

Let’s Chat Over Coffee

I’m a firm believer in the Buffini “Work by Referral” system. I’m not looking for a quick commission; I’m looking to be your real estate resource for life. You might see me out on my bike near Guelph Lake or doing a “coffee pop-by” in your neighborhood.

If you see me, let’s talk about where Guelph has been—and where your future in this city is going.
